Slingshot Big Weekend Away 2021

by Adam Hochmuth |

Welcome again everyone to The Kite Loft Australia! Today I thought I'd do a run down on Slingshots Big Weekend Away.

On the 26th of February I travelled down to the beautiful little coastal village of Old Bar on the Mid-North Coast of NSW. My first stop was Lennox to pick up a buggy from Steve McCormick and strap it to the roof for some extra weekend fun. After arriving on Friday night I rushed over to the opening night dinner at the Flow Bar, an awesome coastal hipster establishment. Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in the area. I was a bit surprised to find that the Slingshot crew had changed so much. Gone were the days of ladies dancing on tables and substances sprinkled all about, don't worry, I did bring it up with management and was promptly fed a pint of beer and told to "grow up", apparently everyone else has πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ˜œ. It was a really great catch up with friends from up and down the coast. After dinner we went back to the campsite for some late night buggy action on the beach till the wee hours of the morning. Beau Pilgrim even used the buggy to dink a fellow kiter, Mel (from the Gold Coast) back to her family further down the beach! Great effort!

For those of us that weren't too dusty, Saturday morning saw a light wind kite session down at Muddy's, one of Australia's best flat water kiting spots. Ryan Parsons from Ocean Rodeo put on a decent show too. Unfortunately it was not long until we got rained out, so it was back to the campsite for some "hair of the dog's" and technical chat from the Slingshot boys. The rain cleared and we all pumped up our light wind kites for a surf session. It turned into quite an emotional afternoon as we all watched Matty Curran have his first kite/buggy session following his motorbike accident. No doubt he'll be back on the board in no time, he's so driven to return to the sport, what an inspiration!

Saturday night was a lovely roast dinner (I'm told) at the local Bowling Club as Slingshot handed out participation swag including cool t-shirts and hats. This was followed by beers back at the camp and solid bants around a random Slingshot stickered floor fan and child restraint seat. Don't ask because I don't know!

Sunday morning was a surf session before bittersweet goodbyes to old friends and new. Thank you Slingshot for putting on an awesome event! It's nice to know that as a broader kite community we can just get together and have a great time regardless of what brand of kite we support or ride!

I hope to see you all at the next Big Weekend Away.

Until then, good winds to you.

Adam
